IBM Research 5 in 5

Every year IBM Research unveils the 5 in 5: five innovations that will change the world in the next five years. The Think Lab deployed an innovative presentation type that has received an unprecedented amount of user interaction.

Role
  • Front-end Development
  • UX design
  • Usability testing

A problem we had run into in the Think Lab is we had two designers designing two entirely different presentations style. Our old style had been used on over 400 presentations because of how simple it was to reproduce and how well it adapted to multiple types of content. The new style was intended to act as a format for overviews, hosting more content and encouraging the interaction of visitors. When the release of the new format did not have the success anticipated, we were faced with the problem of having two entirely different looking formats. We would continue making stories in the old format, but would still keep the new format around.

Old design format

New design format

After some usability testing and user interviews, I identified the successes and frustrations with both presentation formats. The result was an entirely new template that looked similar to the new format, simplified the amount of content presented, and offered multiple interaction styles for visitors. To discover content, visitors can use touch or mouse, swipe open sections or click the button, and all content can be interacted with. Visitors felt compelled to interact with it when passing by and presenters loved the format and integration of different media styles.
